Once you have settled on 7.4kW, the next question is the cable: tethered or untethered. It is a genuine trade-off between everyday convenience and long-term flexibility.
A tethered charger has a fixed, captive cable - you just grab it and plug into the car, with no lead to fetch or store, but the cable length and connector are set for the life of the unit. An untethered charger has a socket you plug your own cable into, which looks tidier, lets you swap cable lengths or connectors, and future-proofs against changes. Tethered chargers
The cable is permanently attached. That is the appeal: it is always there, ready, and there is no lead to lift out of the boot in the rain. The downsides are that the cable length is fixed (so the charger has to be sited to reach the car's port), the connector type is set, and a loose cable hangs on or near the unit when not in use.
Untethered chargers
The unit is just a socket; you provide the cable. It looks neater on the wall, you can keep the cable in the car, and you can change cable length or connector without changing the charger. The trade-off is the small chore of plugging both ends in each time, and storing the cable.
