Cat6 vs Cat6a data cabling guide

Quick answer

Cat6 and Cat6a are both twisted-pair data cables, but Cat6a has more bandwidth and carries 10 Gigabit Ethernet the full 100 metres, whereas Cat6 supports 10GbE only over shorter runs (around 55 metres, and less with interference). Cat6 is fine for gigabit networks and short 10G links; Cat6a is the choice for full-length 10G, dense environments and future-proofing. Cat6a is thicker, often shielded, and costs a little more to buy and terminate.

This is about data cable - the network cabling that carries Ethernet to computers, access points and cameras not mains power cable. If you are wiring data points in a home or office, the choice usually comes down to Cat6 or Cat6a, and the difference is real.

First, this is data cable

Cat6 and Cat6a are structured data cabling, terminated on RJ45 outlets and patch panels to carry Ethernet. They are nothing to do with mains power cable - different standards, different job. If you need power wiring, that is a separate product entirely.

Which should you install?

  • Home network, mostly gigabit, short runs - Cat6 is ample.
  • Office backbone, cameras, Wi-Fi access points, dense installs - Cat6a for full-length 10G headroom.
  • Anywhere you want to cable once and not revisit for a decade - Cat6a for future-proofing.

Getting the install right

The cable is only half the job: performance depends on quality outlets, correct termination and respecting bend radius and separation from power cables. Cat6a’s thicker, often shielded construction needs a little more room and care. WEW stocks Cat6 and Cat6a cable, outlets and patch panels for home and commercial data points.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cat6a worth it over Cat6? +

If you want full-length 10 Gigabit Ethernet, a dense or interference-prone environment, or long-term future-proofing, yes. For a mostly gigabit home network with short runs, Cat6 is perfectly adequate and cheaper.

Can Cat6 do 10 Gigabit? +

Over shorter runs, yes - typically to around 55 metres, and less where there is interference. For guaranteed 10GbE across the full 100 metres, Cat6a is the cable designed for it.

Is data cable the same as power cable? +

No. Cat6 and Cat6a are structured data cables for networks, terminated on RJ45. They are a completely different product from mains power cable and are installed to different standards.
